The Role of Slavery in Roman Comedy Essay Example for Free

The Role of Slavery in Roman Comedy Essay A Greek comedic dramatist named Menander composed a play with a similar title. Since Menander’s adaptation is lost, students of history aren’t sure how unique Terence’s rendition is. We can associate that probably some with Terence’s rendition is only an interpretation or a marginally altered type of Menander’s. One of the most repeating subjects in Greek and Roman Theater is that of the ace and the slave. Pretty much every play by Plautus contained â€Å"the crafty slave† who outmaneuvered or scorned his master’s activity. George Duckworth portrayed this relationship saying, â€Å"It is not really conceivable that, in actuality, old slaves had as much opportunity as the captives of Roman parody, nor would they be able to have been as blunt and as impudent,† (Duckworth 288). Topics, for example, this looked to decrease the cruel truth of subjection and prejudice through parody. Since Plutarch and Terence portrayed slaves more as free men than as detainees, their comedies battled the conventional thoughts of subjugation and separation. Before examining servitude in Roman plays, it is essential to know the traditions of the Roman Theater. Every single Roman resident went to the performance center for nothing, on the grounds that either the city supported the play, or a rich, singular resident paid for the creation. These people may be running for an up and coming political decision, so they gave diversion to the Roman individuals to pick up favor with them. The better the play, the better their notoriety would be. When all is said in done, the Romans of the time, battle and gore were the very pinnacle of wants for amusement. The more reasonable and abhorrent the occasion, the more they had a good time. At that point, ladies were not permitted to have jobs in the theater, and in the first place phases of Roman Theater, ladies couldn't go to the creations. Little youngsters assumed the female jobs. However, most curiously, slaves normally made up the whole cast of a Roman creation. There are twenty enduring plays composed by Plautus. The principal occasion of a slave carrying on of character is in the play Captivi. In this play, Philopolemus, an Aetolian is caught and sold into servitude under an Elean specialist. His dad, Hegio continues to purchase numerous Elean captives to exchange for his child. He winds up purchasing a notable Elean named Philocrates, who is joined by his own slave, Tyndarus. Hegio plans to send the ace back to Elis to encourage the exchange. Be that as it may, Tyndarus and Philocrates exchanged characters, which would have made the arrangement fail to work out. Hegio is incensed, and arranges Tyndarus to the quarries. David Konstan clarifies the topic of this play as, â€Å"the struggle between a harsh, regular dad and a child headed to insubordination by the compelling power of sexual enthusiasm. A typical figure in these plays is the family unit slave, who hazards the disappointment of his senior master†¦in request to propel the loving interests of the junior,† (Konstan 59). Rather than the general storyline, Philocrates is the senior ace since he is the first proprietor of Tyndarus. Hegio is the lesser ace since he has as of late got Tyndarus. Hegio still holds all control over Tyndarus, however, and this demonstration of resistance would ordinarily be rebuffed with death for the culprit. Rather, Hegio is persuaded by Tyndarus that his activities were simply out of dependability, and not to annoy Hegio. Hegio regards this and chooses to allow him to live. Another popular play by Plautus that contains the job of the guile slave who isn't rebuffed legitimately is Rudens. Gripus, the captive of a poor man that lives on the coast goes over a money box while angling, and dreams of what he will do with his riches, clarifying that he will purchase his opportunity and become a dictator with his colossal riches. Another slave, Trachalio tags along, however, and claims that in the event that Gripus doesn’t split the fortune with him, at that point he will report Gripus to the first proprietor of the fortune. Gripus contends that the fortune is his in light of the fact that the ocean has a place with nobody, and thus that which is recuperated from the ocean has a place with the discoverer. Trachalio proposes they settle the contention by conversing with Gripus’ proprietor Daemones. Daemones sides with Trachalio, who needed the fortune not for himself, yet for the first proprietor, Palaestra. Daemones then scolds Gripus for his self-centeredness, â€Å"Daemones indignantly sends him into the house and whines about the low quality of slaves; fortunately, he reflects, Gripus didn’t meet another such as himself, or both would have been involved in the crime,† (Konstan 84). Trachalio is the finesse slave in this model, and he, as Tyndarus, isn't spurred by narrow minded reasons, however by making the right decision. This is the motivation behind why the shrewdness slave is commended in Roman Theater. Duckworth portrays the mentality of this slave as, â€Å"the opportunity and disrespect of the comic slaves, their resistance from genuine discipline, their upbeat go-karma existence†¦combine to illustrate slave life that bears little connection to reality,† (Duckworth 290). In his article entitle Comic Shackles, Ulrike Roth explains on this point saying, â€Å"But Geta’s concern isn't proof for the work of fastened work on the land. Both Plautus and Terence, at that point, don't utilize the picture of the affixed slave for deal with the place that is known for Roman slave owners,† (Roth). The slaves don’t really endure any torment over the span of the creations. Truly, the Roman ace definitely would have rebuffed his slave for even the most minor slip-ups, just to keep his notoriety for being a man in power. Duckworth says that, â€Å"however much the captives of parody allude to whips and chains, to the factory and the quarry and the cross, they only from time to time experience them in the plays. The regular use by captives of sobriquets like mastigia, furcifer, uerbero, verbereum caput, as terms of exchange or misuse doesn't imply that the slaves are fundamentally alluding to disciplines which they or their individual slaves have themselves undergone,† (Duckworth 290). Plautus and Terence would prefer not to show reality with regards to subjugation of the time in their creations. This might be so they didn’t affront anybody by summing up what â€Å"most† Romans did. On the off chance that a play was ineffectively gotten, at that point the resident who put resources into the creation would probably obliterate the name of the writer. Duckworth clarifies that, â€Å"when the interest is coordinated against a bombastic fighter or a vile leno, the slave’s ruses have the endorsement of different characters and the compassion of the onlookers. Such cunning is fruitful and there is no doubt of punishment,† (Duckworth 288). At the point when the crowd is on the swindler, there is no requirement for discipline according to the crowd. This method is fundamental in Roman theater. It makes the slave, a savage kind according to most Romans, the legend of the play; a vital part in the result of the story. Much the same as in Miles Gloriosus. Plautus expounds on the character of Palaestrio as another case of this theme. He plots and plans against his new ace Pyrgopolynices so as to restore the seized Philocomasium to his previous ace, Pleusicles. Pleusicles covers up with an elderly person nearby in the wake of getting a letter from Palaestrio about their area. Palaestrio makes an opening in the divider with the goal that the young lady can visit her genuine romance behind the soldier’s back. The arrangement nearly bombs when another slave sees the young lady with another man, yet through his shrewdness Palaestrio figures out how to persuade him it was the girl’s visiting twin sister. He at that point enrolls the assistance of a mistress to sub for the neighbour’s spouse and allures the fighter so he will liberate the young lady. The trick is fruitful, and Palaestrio escapes with his old ace and the young lady. The opportunity that Palaestrio has in this play is something to be wanted by all slaves. The way that he could discover paper to compose a letter to his lord covertly and that he could even compose at all is difficult to envision of a slave during this timeframe. However, his insubordination of the uncalled for officer Pyrgopolynices is respected by the crowd since he is one of the fundamental characters. This delineation of the life of a slave isn't one of the real world, yet it makes for good diversion. The absolving of slaves and the craftiness slave are two significant themes in Roman theater. Duckworth states, â€Å"Angry threats†¦are not to be paid attention to. They are increasingly helpful in depicting the comic parts of a youthful man’s eagerness or an old man’s fury than in illuminating the connection of ace and slave in antiquity,† (Duckworth 289). The slave is generally intended to be a darling character that either urges the fundamental character to make the wisest decision or is simply the principle character.

It also strives to shorten the distance between people through the use of communications technology, ad well as to enhance the security and management of information. Situational AnalysisSWOT AnalysisA SWOT analysis is a valuable tool since it helps to analyse the internal and external environment of a business. Ashil, Frederikson, Davies (2014) say that this tool can help a manager to establish the success and failures of the firm, and as well as to understand the challenges that are facing the operations of the company. This section will conduct a comprehensive SWOT analysis of HCT mobile company, in order to determine that factors that affect its internal and external environment.Strengths * Cu stomer LoyaltyAhuja Medury (2012) defines customer loyalty as a consistent emotional attachment that consumers show towards a given product. Over the years, HTC has managed to attract and retain a broad customer base, which have since remained loyal to this product. In this case, the company should only focus on marketing to new products, and works out strategies that will ensure that the prevailing consumers remain loyal. This has been achieved by delivering top-notch products to the consumer and setting up efficient customer centres in different cities. These customers who are loyal can also be used as marketing platforms by creating marketing rhymes, as explained by Even, Shankaranarayanan, Berger (2010). * Pioneering InnovationsHTC is known for its unique style and creative devices. HTC has come up with more than one outstanding innovation that has placed it on top of many well-known smart phones. The first personal data assistant in the world was developed by this company in the year 1997. In 2007, the firm fascinated the market when it displayed the worldà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s first 3D touch-screen smart phone. Eltantawy (2015) reveals that in 2009, another model, the HTC Sense, was launched with the objectives of meeting user habits and giving consumers a new intelligent experience with the phone. Later, they produced HTC Hero, which propelled them to winning a 2011 award for the best smart phone designer. * International PresenceTorabi (2013) argues that operating business from one country can be tricky, and risky since the entire firms become exposed to political and economic risks that may arise in that nation. In this case, multinational companies are advantageous since they are not subjected to policies and rules from a single environment. HTC, being an international company, is not an exception of these advantages. An international presence also gives this company a chance to sell many products and hence enjoy the benefits of scale. * High Growth RateMany people did not know HTC before the year 2007. However, as Dominici, (2012) explains, the company has expanded at a fast rate in the recent years, and it now sells its products in many countries across the globe. The Bloomberg business review indicates that the company experienced a $1.5 billion upsurge in their last quarter sales for the year 2014. HTC recorded an operating profit of close to $200 million, unlike the $30 million that had been projected by analysts. It is foreseen that that HTC will continue to grow at tremendous rates in the year 2015, as it plans to launch new smart phone models into the market.Weaknesses * High PricesAccording to El-Gohary (2011) price is one of the most important factors that consumers consider while making decisions to purchase a product. As much as people may desire to buy a certain product, they are always restricted by their budget. Many HTC products are usually sold at a higher price compared to similar phones from companies like Samsung or Huawei. The company has not shown any indication that it may lower the prices for its phones; it keeps producing good but expensive phones, which are out of the reach of many potential consumers. They should consider manufacturing low-cost products for lowly and middle-income consumers. * Limited AdvertisingAdvertising is an essential part of any business, as described by Baldus, Voorhees, Calantone (2015) since it is one of the best and most effective methods for communicating to consumers about your products and services. HTC has invested a lot of money in innovation and production of unique and high-performing products, yet it has given very little focus on product advertising. This makes it hard to recruit new consumers since the potential market does not have enough information about HTC mobile phones.Opportunities * International MarketThe world is steadily opening up to one large market, where businessmen and consumers can move freely. This is an opportunity for HCT to expa nd strategically to different friendly nations across the universe. Many countries in parts of Africa and Asia are opening up for business. The international community is also campaigning against strict and unfavourable business policies and regulations that hinder international business. This firm can expand strategically in nations that are opening up, and increase its customers, which will eventually translate to higher revenues. * Demand for Innovative ProductsThe need forÂunique and innovative products among consumers of mobile phones is rising speedily. Doligalski et al., (2015) reveals that modern day smartphone customers are more interested in the innovativeness and creativity of mobile phones as opposed to the traditional customers who were only concerned with a few utility functions. This company can take advantage of this and produce products that will appeal to this market niche before other competing companies spot the opportunity.Threats * Price WarsAs more compani es infiltrate into the smartphone market, it is increasingly becoming hard to attract consumers. Companies have resorted to using price wars as a method of luring potential consumers into buying their products. HTC smartphones are highly priced, as compared to many other brands from the same industry. * Speed of Technological AdvancementPuccinelli, Wilcox, Grewal (2015) reveal that the world has never witnessed a fast technological evolution like what is currently being seen in the world. Consumers needs are expanding speedily too, and firms have to keep up with this speed. As much as new technology is advantageous, companies find it expensive to keep updating their systems. HTC has to replace and find new machinery to be able to deliver products with the latest technology. This also creates the threat of having an enormous amount of dead stock when consumers shift their technological needs when the company still has a large number of unsold products. * CompetitionHTC faces signifi cant competition from mobile phone giants like Apple, Samsung, Huawei, and other companies like Techno mobile that are starting to gain popularity in the industry. Dominici (2012) reveals that attracting Apple consumers is one of the trickiest challenges that face HTC; while, on the other hand, Apple has positioned itself strategically to win over the minds of most smartphone lovers, especially the young generations.Marketing Strategic Plan SegmentationEltantawy (2015) says that a marketing technique cannot be useful in buyers from all markets. Segmentation helps to ensure that each market is classified depending on the segments that will appeal to it, in order to develop a good relationship with potential customers. According to Torabi (2013), markets can be segmented geographically, demographically, based on psychographics, or according to behaviour. The market for HTC M9 will be divided ba... This is a marketing plan for HTC M9, which comes with a 20-megapixel camera an eye-catching hardware and octa-core processor, posing as a strong competitor to models like iPhone 6 plus and Samsung Galaxy 6. The paper will consider analysing the internal and external environment of this company, as well as other factors that can affect the marketability of this new phone.Mission StatementThe mission statement for HTC is to grow into the largest innovator, designer, producer and supplier of mobile devices for communication and information tools.

Dantes Monsters Essay Example For Students

Dantes Monsters Essay The monsters in Dantes Inferno are drawn almost directly from classical mythology. He creates some small demons and other beings, but the major monsters are taken from Greek and Roman lore. Dante uses monsters in his poem for many purposes. They all have specific jobs and are not just there purely to freighted the reader. Most of the jobs, that the monsters serve are in a modified municipal fashion. They are ferrymen, and guards to the prisons of hell. The monsters are not truly feared by the other characters of the story, for the people just seem to expect the monsters to do the jobs that they are doing. On the other hand, the demons that Dante creates are objects that strike fear into the hearts of those who see them. There are certain exceptions to the rule but for the most part the monsters fit this general mold. The first monster, that Dante encounters, is the ferryman Charon. Charon is not a true monster, for he is an old may with circles of flames around his eyes. The main reason that Dante fears Charon is not because he is physically imposing. It is because he is a little uneasy about his passage into the underworld and he does not know what to expect. Keep in mind that he has just passed thru the gates of hell, that are inscribed with some imposing sentences. These words cause Dante to think about whether he is going to be able to return from hell or if he is going to join the dammed. Then he approaches Charon who begins to shout at Dante and his guide Virgil. Dante is so overwhelmed by the scene that he passes out. Charon may not be a horrifying physical monster, but the mental devices that he uses on Dante and their effects, surely make him deserving of the title, monster. Charon comes directly from mythology, however he has a somewhat different job in this poem. In classical mythology, Charon is the ferryman across the river Styx. In the inferno, Dante makes him the ferryman for the river Acheron and uses another monster for the Styx which is deeper into hell. Charon is a very angry and objects to Dantes crossing the river because Dante is still alive and he still has the hope of going to heaven. Charon shouts at all the evil spirits that wish to cross the river into hell, for he is trying to speed up their decision to cross. Unfortunately, they have made this decision in their lives and consequently Divine Justice pushes them along. However, the action is still portrayed as a decision and this is why Charon encourages Dante not to make such a mistake. Virgil explains it to Dante thus: And they are eager to go across the river because Divine Justice goads them with its spur so that their fear is turned into desire. No good spirits ever pass this way and therefore, if Charon objects to youunderstand well what his words imply. (Canto 3 L124-130) What Charons words imply are that he does not want Dante to cross into hell while he still has a chance to be saved. Dante then passes out, seemingly overwhelmed by not only the situation, and his fear of Charon but also because of the fear of his own mortality. The next monster, that Dante encounters, is the Cerberus, a three-headed dog. The Cerberus guards the gluttons at the entrance to the third circle of hell. The scene is that the gluttons are in a ditch of foul-smelling mud and are subject to eternal rain and hail. The Cerberus howls and claws them constantly and he clearly represents the sins that he is guarding. Cerberus three heads and his insatiable appetite(he turns to Dante and Virgil and starts moving towards them until Virgil throws dirt into the three mouths and the monsters appetite is quenched) reflect the sins of the gluttons. Their situation in hell also represents their sins in life, for they are like pigs rooting around in mud. .ue2425cc0ed147f6be70e2337c0286ea5 , .ue2425cc0ed147f6be70e2337c0286ea5 .postImageUrl , .ue2425cc0ed147f6be70e2337c0286ea5 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ue2425cc0ed147f6be70e2337c0286ea5 , .ue2425cc0ed147f6be70e2337c0286ea5:hover , .ue2425cc0ed147f6be70e2337c0286ea5:visited , .ue2425cc0ed147f6be70e2337c0286ea5:active { border:0!important; } .ue2425cc0ed147f6be70e2337c0286ea5 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ue2425cc0ed147f6be70e2337c0286ea5 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ue2425cc0ed147f6be70e2337c0286ea5:active , .ue2425cc0ed147f6be70e2337c0286ea5:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ue2425cc0ed147f6be70e2337c0286ea5 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ue2425cc0ed147f6be70e2337c0286ea5 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ue2425cc0ed147f6be70e2337c0286ea5 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ue2425cc0ed147f6be70e2337c0286ea5 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ue2425cc0ed147f6be70e2337c0286ea5:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ue2425cc0ed147f6be70e2337c0286ea5 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ue2425cc0ed147f6be70e2337c0286ea5 .ue2425cc0ed147f6be70e2337c0286ea5-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ue2425cc0ed147f6be70e2337c0286ea5:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Why I Chose to Be an Engineer Essay The Classical role of the Cerberus is almost the same as the way that Dante uses the monster. In classical mythology, the Cerberus is used to guard the gates of Hades, however in the poem, Dante uses him to guard something else. His hunger is the same in both stories. The classical Cerberus guards the gates of hell and allowed all to go in but none to come out. There are few occasions where the monster was passed on the way out. These include the myths of Orpheus, Hercules and Aeneas. In the story of Orpheus, the Cerberus is lulled to sleep by the flute of Orpheus as he enters the underworld to retrieve his love Eurydice. In the story of Hercules, he has to go down to the underworld and bring the Cerberus back as one of his twelve labors. Finally, the story of Aeneas is the most important of these myths, for in the Aeneid, Aeneas gains exit from hell by feeding the Cerberus cakes filled with sedatives. This use of food to calm the Cerberus in the Aeneid is clearly the reason that Virgil knows how to handle the monster. The Cerberus is another example of Dante using a classical monster to serve a specific purpose in the poem. In this case the Cerberus serves as a guard over specific sins which he happens to represent in his own demeanor. Another monster that Dante encounters, that directly reflects the sins which he guards, is the Geryon. The Geryon is another monster what we see in classical mythology. It is described as a scaled and hairy monster with the tail of a deadly serpent. This tail reflects the serpent-like nature of the people of the 8th circle, those accused of fraud. The Geryon delivers the poets from the 7th to the 8th circle and Dante seems more fascinated than terrified by the Geryon. The only discussion we see of his fear towards the monster is when he looks at the tail and wonders how he is supposed to climb back on to go to the 8th circle. He is more correctly characterized as entranced by the flight of the Geryon. Dante dedicated almost half of the 17th canto to describing its flight. He very eloquently uses metaphors and similes to liken the flight of the Geryon to that of an eel and a falcon slowly searching for prey. Like a falcon to long in flight from hunting yet too far from the falconer to hear instructions of its failure, that turns within its gyre a hundred downward turns, proud and tired but finally bored, so we descended to that place all fire has claimed,(Canto 17 L 115-120) The Geryon does not really guard sinners like the Cerberus but the threat of the Geryon always looms over the people of the 7th and 8th circles. The people of the 8th circle have much more to worry about in the category of monsters. For, the aforementioned demons that Dante creates to freighted and horrify the reader are found in the 8th circle of hell. These demons are the Malebolge who guard those dammed for all types of fraud. The demons inflict wounds on any of the sinners who stick their heads up above the boiling pitch they are submerged in. The demons are clearly sadistic and very lively about their jobs. They seem to really enjoy the torture that they inflict on their prey. This demonstrates that Dante must have really disliked those who committed fraud for him to create such a horrible fate for them. The demons even chase after Dante and Virgil by the end of the canto and Virgil is forced to carry Dante down to the next circle of hell. The fact that the demons turn of the poets reflects the fact that they are truly evil, unlike the other monsters, because they go directly against the divine will that protects Dante and Virgils mission. Essentially, these are all of the monsters that Dante encounters in the underworld. .u1153ec8651ca379bd948e6202e5d4ffb , .u1153ec8651ca379bd948e6202e5d4ffb .postImageUrl , .u1153ec8651ca379bd948e6202e5d4ffb .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u1153ec8651ca379bd948e6202e5d4ffb , .u1153ec8651ca379bd948e6202e5d4ffb:hover , .u1153ec8651ca379bd948e6202e5d4ffb:visited , .u1153ec8651ca379bd948e6202e5d4ffb:active { border:0!important; } .u1153ec8651ca379bd948e6202e5d4ffb .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u1153ec8651ca379bd948e6202e5d4ffb { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u1153ec8651ca379bd948e6202e5d4ffb:active , .u1153ec8651ca379bd948e6202e5d4ffb:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u1153ec8651ca379bd948e6202e5d4ffb .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u1153ec8651ca379bd948e6202e5d4ffb .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u1153ec8651ca379bd948e6202e5d4ffb .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u1153ec8651ca379bd948e6202e5d4ffb .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u1153ec8651ca379bd948e6202e5d4ffb:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u1153ec8651ca379bd948e6202e5d4ffb .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u1153ec8651ca379bd948e6202e5d4ffb .u1153ec8651ca379bd948e6202e5d4ffb-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u1153ec8651ca379bd948e6202e5d4ffb:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Vietnam War Essay Thesis He runs into other assorted demons of his own creation, as well as more classical monsters like the centaurs. However, the other monsters do not play as large a role as the ones mentioned above. Dante does an excellent job of incorporating classical monsters into his poem. They not only serve to allude to his knowledge of classical literature but he also perfectly incorporates them so that they are doing essentially the same job in both his work and in their respective myths. The monsters are clearly used, not to strike fear into the reader, although they do demonstrate the horror of hell. They are most likely used to more clearly elaborate the situations that they are put in, such as to directly reflect the sinners they are in contact with. Dante effectively utilizes the different traits of the monsters he uses and they serve to make his poem more successful.
